Traffic Signal: Promo Watch Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Gaurav Malani, August 9, 2006 - 07:05 IST

Madhur Bhandarkar is back. And pretty soon this time! His tryst with realistic cinema continues with 'Traffic Signal' that talks about the lives of people staying in the slums of Mumbai and who operate around the city signals.

The trailer of 'Traffic Signal' opens amidst the honking of vehicles on a fast moving city street in Mumbai. Dabbawalas, sweepers, street show players, taxis, drug addicts, et al you get to see all the elements you will usually encounter on a signal in the city. Detailing always shows in the scripts of Bhandarkar's films.

As the movie name flashes, it introduces the lead characters of the film.
- Kunal Khemu as a slum dweller
- Neetu Chandra going in a complete deglam avatar for the film as a rag-picker
- Upendra Limaye as the drug peddler
- Konkana Sen Sharma playing a prostitute with that extra lipstick smeared on her face
- Ranvir Shorey as the pimp

The promo bears a brazen look throughout and as the executive producer's name flashes on the screen as 'Bhandarkar Entertainment' you know that Madhur Bhandarkar has also ventured into production with this film.

This Percept Picture Presentation faintly reminds of the 1981 classic film Chakra starring Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, directed by Rabindra Dharamraj that was the best film when it came to depicting lives of slum-dwellers. Even Sudhir Mishra's Dharavi had a similar setting. Incidentally Sudhir Mishra stars in Traffic Signal as a mafia don.
