Omkara’s tryst with the Censors
By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 29, 2006 - 04:27 IST
If you have seen Omkara, then you might have witnessed some of the bold and obscene dialogues in the film. With some of the worst foul language prevalent in the film and bold bed scenes (though aesthetically shot), an ‘A’ certificate was guaranteed. But all was not hunky-dory for the producers who thought that the film would be given the ‘A’ certificate without any cuts or changes. They too had to meet with the demands of the Censor Board members.
In the film Ajay Devgan and Manav Kaushik are political rivals trying to make a deal. The two have a difference of opinion and Manav sneers at Ajay, “Utne ki thukaai na hogee jitnay ka petticoat phat jayega!” (The resulting pleasure will not be as great as the damage to the ripped petticoat).
The Censor board felt that this line would be derogatory to the Indian woman as a petticoat is worn by a lot of females in India and it would be demeaning to them.
After some squabble, director Vishal Bharadwaj finally gave in and decided to re-dub the word Petticoat to Pant-Coat.
So, the Censor Board wins again but this time, though trivial it made a lot of sense.
