Today, the 25th of May 2006, marks the first death anniversary of renowned actor and politician Mr. Sunil Dutt. Born as Balraj Dutt in Pakistan in the year 1929, he began his career as an actor in 1955 with a film called Railway Platform. He was however highly appreciated for playing the role of Birju in the 1957 classic Mother India. His portrayal of Birju, a rebellious young man ending up becoming a dacoit, is still fresh in the memory of the audiences. It was during the making of 'Mother India' that Sunil Dutt met his future wife, Nargis, who interestingly played his mother in the film. Later in his career, Sunil Dutt went to play the role of sensitive lover in films like 'Sadhna' (1958) , 'Sujata' (1959) and 'Main Chup Rahungi' (1962). His three films with B.R.Chopra which include 'Gumraah' (1963) , 'Waqt' (1965) and 'Humraaz' (1967) were all super hits. He again shocked the audiences when he played comedy role of Bhola, a funny young villager who falls in love with a hep urban girl. It was like a completely image transformation of Mr. Dutt who was earlier see mainly in serious roles.

Coming to his personal life, Mr. Dutt lost his wife Nargis to cancer in 1981. Dutt then took on to politics and social service. He became Sheriff of Mumbai in 1981. In 1984 he was elected on a Congress ticket from Mumbai North-west to the 8th Lok Sabha. He also became the Minister in the Union Cabinet. He continued his career as a successful politician, and disappeared from movies. He was finally seen after a decade in the film Munnabhai MBBS (2003) which turned out to be his last film. He was the sports minister when he died following a heart attack last year.

The above picture is the family portrait of the Dutt family. Along with Mr. Sunil Dutt can be seen his son Sanjay Dutt, daughters Namrata and Priya, son-in-law Kumar Gaurav and his grand daughters. After his death, his daughter Priya continued his political legacy by standing for elections from her father's constituency and winning it.

In the memory of Dutt Saab, his family today organized a prayer meeting which is open to all. People who were his well wishers could come and pay their respects to the memory of the man who lived a glorious life.
