Banaras: Promo Watch Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Gaurav Malani, March 1, 2006 - 01:52 IST

While filmmakers are running around the world canning global beauty in their reels, Banaras comes in as a pleasant change where the makers have based the entire story around the holy city of Banaras, rich with Hindu heritage. Urmila Matondkar who, off lately, has turned quite choosy with her selection of roles (the actress was last seen in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara and Naina) plays the central character. Ashmit Patel too has an interesting role while Naseeruddin Shah will be seen in a different getup of Babaji in the film.

Banaras is a love story set on the backdrop of the oldest living city on the planet. The holy city Banaras, situated on the banks of river Ganga adds a mystic element to the love story.

As the trailer opens with flashes of religious scriptures and chants of 'Gayatri mantra' in the background, it talks about a truth so powerful associated to the city of Banaras that claims to change your life forever.

Banaras is the love story of a rich Brahmin girl Shwetambari (Urmila Matondkar) and a low caste music teacher Soham (Ashmit Patel) who face opposition from the orthodox and conservative sect of the society. A shattered Shwetambari abandons the city. 17 years later, the city calls her back. Will she return to Banaras?

The film written and produced by L C Singh and directed by Pankaj Parashar will release in April 2006.
