You have been seeing the regular trailers of Rang De Basanti, playing the title track, making rounds of the small screen. Now check out the new theatrical version. Unlike the first trailer that opened on a boisterous note playing the title track, this one opens on the mellifluous notes of uninterrupted guitar strings playing a light jingle in the background.
Aamir Khan is introduced as a compulsive flirt, talking to the golden-haired British actress Alice Patten. Aamir speaks in a heavy Punjabi accent in the film to justify his character based in Delhi. The accent just gets heavier as the promo progresses. Will the audiences accept his Punjabi accent like they accepted his Avadhi accent in Lagaan is to be seen?
The dialogues that follow clearly imply the theme of the movie. While one might have imagined that Rang De Basanti is a fun comedy flick from the first trailer, this trailer gives the movie a more social look talking about the upliftment of the country and the corrupt systems within. Still it doesn't get conventionally preachy. Rang De Basanti thematically looks like a Prakash Jha film but with a Dil Chahta Hai kind of treatment.
Cinematographer Binod Pradhan captures a splendid shot of Aamir Khan falling horizontally (face up) into a pool of water. If you remember, Pradhan had captured the same frame in Mission Kashmir where Hrithik Roshan descends from a height, in the climax shot. The impact is just awe-inspiring!
The title track seeps in finally in the trailer, with members from Aamir's gang confronting with each other. A mob of people with candle in hands gather at India Gate in Delhi. A revolution is about to happen. A generation awakens. The trailer ends on Aamir's epilogue where he inspires his team to take up responsibilities or stop cribbing about the system.
