This man's Maharashtrian roots seem to just get deeper and deeper. “Me bara aahe!” When he said those words in his booming baritone, the UP bhaiyya peeped out of Subhash Nagre. The accent wasn't correct nor was the punctuation, his tilak and rudraksh did all the talking but the impact, piercing! Amitabh Bachchan as the Maharashtrian messiah in Sarkar was fascinating for the lack of words.
Amitabh's connection with Shivaji's hometown will stretch into this week when the giant actor recreates hi-voltage drama as Vidyadhar Ramkrishna Patwardhan in Mahesh Manjrekar's ambitious venture Viruddh. He along with Sharmila Tagore play an ageing middle class Maharashtrian couple who await the return of their foreign returned son. In a sudden twist of fate, the son is killed and the father is refused justice by the system. Mahesh Manjrekar tells the story of an anguished father who decides to bring the culprits to book. And does Mr. Bachchan look like the part? You would have the answer if you saw the actor performing a Ganesh aarti in the film.
Put him any garb, throw him into any place, ask him to play any character, show him any script and this 65 year old still rocks! Bachchan sir, tumhi ek ati uttam kalakar aahot!
