Long wait for the music of 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' to hit the stands got over with the movie's 'Curtain Raiser' on Thursday evening at PVR Priya, New Delhi. Normally such events happen in the heartland of movies, Mumbai, but 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' was an exception. This writer was amongst the select media folks, friends and relatives of the moviemaker who were invited for the curtain raiser that also marked the official music launch of the music of 'Mangal Pandey - The Rising'. The event included showcasing the movie, screening of all the tracks from the movie followed by a press conference.

Present at the occasion was an entire cast and crew of the movie that included producers Bobby Bedi & Deepa Sahi, director Ketan Mehta, film-maker Yash Chopra [who distributes the film], actors Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee & Amisha Patel, composer A.R.Rehman, lyricist Javed Akhtar saab, writer Farrukh Dhondy, art director Nitin Desai, PVR Cinemas MD Ajay Bijli amongst others. Guest of the evening was General J.J. Singh, Chief Of Army Staff, who officially released the music of the film.

The show began with an exclusive screening of all the 6 tracks from the movie. The title song 'Mangal Mangal' and the mujra 'Main Vari Vari' drew maximum applause and instantaneously made their way into the hearts of music lovers [For more details, catch on our exclusive music review]. Once this was through, everyone from the cast and crew was invited on the stage one after another who gave insight into their contribution to the film.

A glittery event, the highlight of the show were Javed saab's one liners that had the people present in the auditorium in splits. On a remark that he had to dig down in history 150 years back, he quipped instantaneously "...par sab gaane maine hi likhe hain [...but I have written all the songs]". Aamir Khan came up with not many sound bytes but still charmed the audience inspite of his short speech.

For producer Bobby Bedi, it was a dream that was finally being realized while for Javed saab, it was a privileged to be a part of such a team with director Ketan Mehta at the helm. Rani Mukherjee remarked that she had never played the role of a prostitute earlier [which she does in Mangal Pandey] and it was indeed challenging and interesting to portray something like this where she got an opportunity to show what all can a prostitute do if she wills. Amisha Patel sounded rather cute when she mentined how she hung around the sets of 'Ghulam' on her vacation to India [since she was studying then] to catch a glimpse of Aamir and get his autograph.

Amongst the stars, Aamir Khan looked each bit like a boy next door in a suit. Rani looked sweet and simple as always while waving from the stage at little kids but it was Amisha Patel who made many a men skip their heart. She looked absolutely stunning in her outfit [a saree] and conducted herself on stage with a lot of grace. A.R.Rehman was the most causally dressed amongst all and detailed the effort that went through while composing for 'Mangal Pandey'.

After short speeches by each of the people present on stage, the music was launched followed by a brief photo shoot.

'Mangal Pandey - The Rising' opens across globe on 12th August after it gets premiered at Locarno, Switzerland, Aug 3 as the opening film of the Locarno Film Festival.
