The man who started it all… Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 1, 2005 - 05:32 IST

'Mooch nahi toh kooch nahi!' goes a popular saying

And the guy who originally started this trend is Bollywood's Mr.India. “With my non-superstar looks, starting out was difficult in itself, add to that Bollywood's allergy to moustaches. It was a taboo almost” narrates Anil Kapoor as we chat the star about the 'character-look' that Bollywood is currently fascinated with.

“Its great that Hrithik, Aaamir and the rest are trying out different looks for their characters but I was the one who pioneered this trend. I don't mean to boast but this 'look' thing was started by me” Anil informs us. Of late, Shahrukh's tingly mouche for Paheli created a lot of talk as did Aamir Khan who will be seen sporting a real one in his forthcoming epic film, Mangal Pandey. “Let's see if Shahrukh is able to pull off the look and set a trend. As for Aamir, I personally like his look, it looks very authentic” he replies.

“I remember Manmohan Desai saying 'Anil Kapoor nahi chalnewala, hamari industry muchonwale hero nahi pasand karti” It must have felt de-moralising, we enquire, “Of course yes, especially when you are just starting out. But I kept going at it, playing characters to my best abilities and changing the look every time. I even shaved off my mouche in Lamhe because the character demanded it” he takes us through his filmography. And one day, Manmohan Deasai came to me saying that he wanted to make a film with me! That was the happiest day of my life!” he says reflecting.
