“I got drunk and slept mid shoot on sets” - Chunky Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 1, 2005 - 08:34 IST

He took a long hiatus from Bollywood, doing itsy-bitsy roles here and there. Within six years Chunky Pandey became the superstar of Bangladeshi films, from what we hear people worship him there. After creating waves there, he is back with a bang. He portrays a pivotal character in RGV's D. He speaks to IndiaFM about his role and how important the film is.

You had practically vanished from the Bollywood scenario…where had you been?
I went to Bangladesh to make some money (laughs). I did two films where I did guest appearance (Qayamat and Elaan). I had done small roles in both the movies, which I consider the trailers of my career, and the main show is going to start now with D and Sukh.

Tell us about your character?
I am playing a character called Raghav and the film is about organized crime and it's the story of a man who made business out of the entire Mumbai underworld, he has corporatised it. There are small gangs in this underworld and I am the boss of one such small gang. Deshu comes and joins my gang and then he progresses from there and he becomes the don.

How did you like Ramu's style of working, since this is the first time you are working with him?
First of all I never imagined that I would be working in Ramu's film and I am sure neither did he think that Chunky Pandey will work in his movie. The story is very realistic; the only problem could be that since Ramuji has made such nice movies of the same genre in the past Satya, Company, I only hope people don't just draw comparisons. This is a different movie although of the same style but the story is totally different.

How is the story different from Company?
D ends where Company starts.

Tell us something about the look of your character?
In D, I have long hair and have kept a beard, if Ramu had his way he would have made his heroine wear beards too (laughs). He loves the bearded look for his actors. People are appreciating the look. I am doing another film now where I have shorter straight hair, so I feel in actors should play characters as much as possible in the movies and should keep experimenting.

What do you think of Randeep's acting?
Right now Randeep is like our closely guarded secret, so I can't speak much about him but I can tell you that he has done a fantastic job. Nobody could have played this character in our industry. He has done the role with such conviction.

Any memorable incidents on the sets?
I have a bottle of beer in my hand all throughout the film. And I like alcohol, not that I am an addict so there was a particular scene I was doing with Randeep where we did so many retakes that I actually got drunk and slept. The funniest part is that they have retained this scene in the movie.

D is like a big comeback for you, what are your expectations?
There is comeback only if you go somewhere, whereas I would like to believe that I am still in people's hearts and memory. Actors are known and are in demand based on their last film and I only pray that D works. I have a very good role in the film and I am sure people will notice me. I am sure that the film will work and the more it runs the better it will be for all of us who are associated with the film.

Can you relate the character you are doing in D with any role you have done previously in your career?
The role is matured and if I have to compare a movie with any of my earlier movies then I think that would be Tezaab, the character of Baban was also mildly dark, he was a street goon. So D is somewhere on the lines of Tezaab's character.

Are you planning to work parallel in both Bangladeshi movies and Bollywood?
I did enough of work in Bangladesh for 6-8 years but my heart was always here in Mumbai, in Bollywood. Now I want to stay here.
