“Kaal is a Gen-X film! It's very now, very today” - Lara Dutta
By IndiaFM News Bureau, April 21, 2005 - 02:36 IST
She's arguably the most articulate actor in filmdom. Take no nonsense, give none either, the mantra has stood the svelte actor in good health. Not that she doesn't make for great eye candy; her shimmering bod, husky baritone & sophisticated demeanor can't be bargained for. Take it from us, Lara Dutta is refined aggression.
This April, the luscious lady teams up with Vivek Oberoi on a wild ride in the Karan Johar-Shahrukh Khan production, Kaal. The actor in an exclusive conversation with IndiaFM talks about the men, the scare and superstition…

"I pulled a muscle & my leg was in a cast!"

At the outset what is your character like?
I play this happy-go lucky girl, Ishika. She is head over heels in love with Dev (Vivek). Ishika is highly superstitious. For instance she believes that one shouldn't wear black on a Friday, a black cat crossing the streets is bad omen & the likes…
Go on…
Yeah, so when they incidentally land up at Jim Corbett & experience strange happenings, she believes that there is a bigger hand at it. The girl has heightened intuition & senses things first. Her quirks made Ishika an interesting character to play.
You have worked with all three guys, lets kickstart with Vivek.
(Laughs) Hmm…okay, the trap is being laid. Fine, shoot.
'Vivek controversy Oberoi', you have teamed with him on more occasions than one. Is he the proverbial 'villain' or 'victim'?
Neither. He is just another guy doing his job. There have been times when the media has been up in arms against him, but from whatever I know of him, Vivek is a fantastic actor! We vibe very well, we tend to play-off each other. It's just that the tide is against him. The see-saw at the box office will continue, but he's a confident kid. And a thoroughly enjoyable person to be with.
Time for the hunk…
(Laughs) John is an extremely good looking man! Unbelievably hardworking & a complete professional. He wants to make it big and is willing to give it his all.
To round it off, a quick take on Mr. Intense, Ajay...
That's precisely the image that I took to the sets, but within a day's time I realized that, all that has been understood of him is a fa?e. He is an incredible guy, always there with advice.
That shuts away the rumors of him being intimidating…
Completely! Ajay is nothing like that. He is a cool chap!

“Nobody can quite entertain as Shahrukh does!”
|
After Elaan, do we see Lara do a 'Lara Croft' in this thriller?
Not really, just prior to the shoot, I tore a muscle in the leg and my foot was in a cast for quite some time. We were quite skeptical as to how I would pull off the shoot, but I did! I was on painkillers, it was physically gruelling but I managed good.
Give me a horror film that you thought was ridiculous…
(Laughs) I think Scary movies I, II & III were silly, but I loved them never-the-less.

“John is a good looking man”

What do you think is the 'X' factor of Kaal?
I think of Kaal as a Gen X film. It is very now, very today, made with the sensibilities of a young director. But what makes the film super special is the good intention of sending out wildlife preservation messages.
Kaal is incomplete without its producers. You like SRK the actor better or SRK the producer?
(Smiles) As a producer, he didn't leave any stone unturned to ensure that we got the best possible in the wilds. As an actor, I don't think anyone can quite entertain as Shahrukh does!
