Amitabh’s voice…

No Sudesh Bhonsle
Then there ain’t any Amitabh either.
Every time Amitabh Bachchan shakes a leg to a chartbuster, it is Sudesh Bhosle’s voice bouncing off the microphone. Quite simply, he is Amitabh’s voice. Bhonsle has sung for the superstar for god-knows-how-many-years, been a successful playback singing, gone on strings of shows. So when we asked the singer of the ‘been-there-done-that’ variety, what is the one thing that he now wishes for? He came up with an uncut reply, “To cut an album in my voice”
We can understand that. Being Bachchan’s voice is great but then you have to forgo yours. After letting out his secret desire he went on to recount an incident that makes us doubt whether he will really be able to break free of the Bachchan mould…
Sudesh recollects, “I have always had this spiritual leaning in me which pushed me into singing some devotional songs. A recording studio wanted me to sing some Ganesh bhajans for them. It was one of those days when the melody, lyrics and meter all fell into place and I liked singing it. Recording done, the composer was very happy with the results, the lyricist liked my work too and to top it, I being my biggest critic somehow liked the way I rendered the song. Song wrapped, I was about to leave the studio when the owner of the studio dashed in and asked for the song to be played. He heard it, pulled a long face, frowned and said, “Acchi hain par Jhumma-Chumma ka dum nahi hain!” The entire studio was in splits.
