Anil’s stubble story
By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 18, 2005 - 23:27 IST
His wife’s murder might have brought him rave reviews as has the lengths to which he went to create his look for the film. When we talked to the actor, we realized that Anil happens to be among the pioneers of the stubble look. The talented actor gave us a little dope into how he cultivated the look.
“Baat tab ki hain jab main naya-naya industry mein aaya tha”he starts off in his trademark Hindi. “When I approached producers for roles, they used to offer me romantic leads. After a time, I started finding that jaded. So I started asking them for different characters. That’s when they told me that my face looked boyish and innocent for tough roles and that, they couldn’t see me playing a ruffian or a gali ka gunda. That was it. I decided I needed to do something about it. So I grew a stubble to give my face that ‘hard’ look. And that kind of caught on big time. It turned into a rage. So popular was it that one day when I was reading a paper, I chanced upon a photograph that read ‘Anil Kapoor’ but it wasn’t me! When I enquired about the goof, I was told that because the stubble look was so strongly associated with me, the sub-editor just took it for granted that if it is a stubble; it has to be Anil!” trails off the actor.
But what has got cynics and janta alike to sit up and take notice is his uber cool look in the release this Friday, Chocolate. The pine crop, thick-rimmed glasses, trench coats, Mr,India definitely makes a point as the cigar-smoking blunt lawyer in Vivek Agnihotri’s suspense soda. “I work on my look, the media fusses over it” comes Anil’s sharp remark. “See, I more concerned at fleshing out my character, the look aspect is just one angle to it. I need to get into the skin of the character and I will do any and everything to get the character alive on screen. The physicality being a prime thing must change” he points out.
