It would be a dream for any actor to be launched as a lead actor in a movie that has Amitabh Bachchan in a major role. The dream does come true for Karan Sharma who gets a launch in 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahey' that has Amitabh Bachchan playing his father. Produced and directed by Romesh Sharma whose last production was 'Hum' [1991] starring Amitabh Bachchan, DJBK is ready for release this Friday, 23rd September. As a part of the countrywide promotion of the movie, a press conference was called at PVR Plaza, New Delhi on last Saturday in which the lead pair of the movie [Karan Sharma and Annabelle Wallis] arrived along with Romesh Sharma.
While the lead pair was dressed in casual black attire, the filmmaker donned a casual blue. Right on time, they straightaway started interacting with the media without any fuss or delay. After around half an hour of one-on-one conversation, there was a press conference for some time where three of them addressed the media before getting on with further one-on-one conversations.
Romesh Sharma was the one who kick started the event by introducing himself and talking about his Delhi background. In fact he had done his school and college in the city and felt wonderful to be back in the city. From here, he went on to introduce the leading lady of the film first. He introduced her as, "Meet Annabelle Wallis, a pretty and charming girl, who is the leading lady of the film. She is based out of London and has done theatre, advertisements and some independent films in the past while some Hollywood films too are coming her way".
Then he went on to introduce his son Karan Sharma and quipped, "We had already worked on the same script for a French TV serial earlier and were planning to make it into a full fledged Hindi movie. We wanted to cast actors who had never worked earlier, were amateurs and could act spontaneously. By this time Karan had expressed his desire to be an actor, and since he was 23 and the role demanded a 23 year old lead, he fitted in perfectly. This is how DJBK became a launch pad for Karan. Moreover even I am re-launching myself as it has been quite a while since I made 'Hum'".
On being asked how he found his heroine Annabelle, he said, "We wanted a foreigner girl for this role and spoke to casting agents in London. There the work is quite systematic as far as casting is concerned. Our cinematographer Binod Pradhan was in London during that time and out of the 80-90 girls that were auditioned, we finally chose Annabelle".
Annabelle, looking sweet, perky, innocent and almost a Barbie doll was excited about all the attention she was getting and when asked whether she was really expecting to be a part of DJBK, she said that no one is ever sure about whether a role would eventually come or not. A month after the audition when she finally got a confirmation call, she was definitely on a high and all excited to be a part of the movie. She also said that she had a great experience from shooting in a Bollywood film as everyone seemed to be so passionate about films in India. It appeared to her that films are simply embedded in the part of the culture. She also loved the film's music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and said that though she didn't know what she was actually singing, she still knew that she was singing and dancing to something good!
Young Karan Sharma impressed everyone with his humble and down to earth persona while standing tall due to his 6 feet plus stature. Obliging each and everyone who came, he neither tried to be a cool dude nor showed off as someone who was overconfident. Yes, if there were any nervous pangs before the release of his debut movie, then he definitely managed not to make that visible. When told that Bollywood had finally found someone who could look straight into the eyes of Amitabh Bachchan, he grinned that when it came to Big B, the maximum he could do was keep his down and act! He was also honest enough to admit that he nearly froze when he had to deliver his first shot, though he soon gathered up courage to have it canned in 10-15 minutes.
For Annabelle, DJBK was a memorable adventure that she thoroughly enjoyed, while Karan seemed to have had all the fun during the making of the movie. Romesh Sharma thought that it was an honor to have Amitabh Bachchan as a part of his movie and appreciated the fact that Revathy and Big B were paired opposite each other. He couldn't really help but talk about the wonderful performances he had got from the veteran couple because as per him, "Such powerful is the acting of Amitabh Bachchan and Revathy that they managed to create scenes out of silence."
Everyone from the director to the lead pair stressed on the point that DJBK is a subtle movie that has an underplayed flow throughout with lot of moments! Quite positive about DJBK managing to win everyone’s hearts due to a simplistic and heartwarming nature, they left the lounge after spending approximately 2 hours with the media.
With major part of the film shot in Mauritius with some portions in Sweden, DJBK releases this Friday.
