Kyon Ki: Promo Watch
By Gaurav Malani, August 31, 2005 - 02:00 IST
Ok, one would look forward to this film Kyon Ki…
- this is the first time that the combination of Salman Khan and director Priyadarshan come together and also
- this is the first time when Salman is paired opposite Kareena Kapoor.
Surprisingly the trailer doesn't open with Salman Khan ripping of his shirts, like usual but for a change… wearing one. This is his uniform asserting his admission into a mental asylum. He plays a mentally deranged character in the film. And he affirms this with the silly line, “waise to mera naam anand hai, magar mere dost mujhe... anand hi bulate hain”.
Kareena Kapoor plays the hospital nurse who is more of a dictator and always at strict vigil of the patients. With a bindi on her forehead she is given a much simplistic look as against her regular flamboyant 'Poo' image.

Udit Narayan chips in for the title track in his crisp vocals that has a strong Tere Naam hangover. That can be attributed to the fact that the major team of Tere Naam repeats here too - producers Sunil Manchanda - Mukesh Talreja, actor Salman Khan and music director Himmesh Reshammiya. Reshammiya also continues his tradition of coming up with his patented 'chunri-oodhni-kurti' numbers with a dupatta song over here. And the song setting is essentially derived from the Dekh Le number of Munnabhai MBBS with sexy sirens serenading along with patients in the hospital.
The trailer indicates that the movie has two separate unparallel love stories with Salman playing the common element in both. Rimi Sen is his past love and Kareena his current muse. Priyadarshan regulars - Jackie Shroff and Om Puri also star in the movie with both playing senior doctors.
Like all of Priyadarshan's earlier Hindi films, Kyon Ki also is a remake of one of his Malayalam films. This one is a remake of his 1986 film Thalavattam which in turn was inspired by the English film One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. The screenplay is revised, though. Salman is playing the character that was earlier immortalized by Jack Nicholson and Mohanlal.
Priyadarshan earlier wanted Shahrukh Khan to play the role but they had difference of opinions with respect to the climax of the film. And despite this film has the regular dose of Priyadarshan humor, Kyon Ki is not an out-an-out comedy. It has a strong emotional undercurrent with overtones of passion, madness, misery and fate. Don't be surprised if it culminates on a tragic end. Kyon Ki comes from the team of Tere Naam!
