Tathastu: Promo Watch
By Gaurav Malani, August 22, 2005 - 04:26 IST
Trailer duration: 1 minute, 56 seconds
The team of Dus - Sanjay Dutt, director Anubhav Sinha and producer Nitin Manmohan strike again with their next film Tathastu. Tathastu is the Sanskrit word that symbolizes the affirmative response by deities to their disciples' wishes. The apt tagline of the film “So Be It” simplifies the meaning.
As the trailer opens, the first thing that catches your notice is Sanjay Dutt's intensity. In his sharp piercing look, he is introduced as Ravi Rajput, a 40 year-old factory supervisor.
The film is about a father's struggle against the injustice done to his 'son'. Says director Anubhav Sinha, “It is a father's struggle to fight against the immunity and numbness of the society towards the injustice done to his 'son'. Sanjay Dutt plays the father.
11 years of sweat and blood.
9 years of family and love
and one moment of truth… that breaks it all.

Amisha Patel plays Sanjay Dutt's wife. Jayaprada kind of makes a comeback with this film (she was last seen in forgettable role in Khakee). Gulshan Grover plays the bad man. The effective part of the trailer is that it conveys a lot even without playing a single dialogue in it.
The film may faintly remind of two of Mahesh Manjrekar's earlier films both of which starred Sanjay Dutt. Pitaah had Sanjay Dutt playing a similar role who strikes back to avenge the rape of her 9-year-old daughter. And the recently released Viruddh had a tranquil Amitabh Bachchan who turns aggressive to gain the lost pride of his dead son. But as per Sanjay Dutt, Tathastu is a terrific script, unique in its own way.
One of the highlights of the film includes an 8-minute long non-stop dialogue delivery by Sanjay Dutt in the confines of the Yerwada jail in Pune that was shot using 6 cameras and had more than 2000 junior artists.
A Sahara One Motion Pictures and Karma Entertainment production, Tathastu was completed in a record span of less than a month (Sanju has never completed a film so fast). The film is targeted for a Diwali release.
