I never watched movies till I became an actor Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Taran Adarsh, August 18, 2005 - 03:30 IST

He may've returned from Bangkok by an early morning flight [the model turned actor was shooting for Sanjay Gupta's ZINDA in Thailand], but John Abraham is on his feet, catching up with near and dear ones, confirming meetings and talking business with his manager.

John may have moved to the 'A' list of Bollywood and his pay packet may have crossed eight digits, but the teen heart-throb continues to have his feet firmly planted on the ground. No starry airs, no nakhras, no sidekicks, no vices.

The actor has been traveling for a while, he has been inaccessible to clarify his stand on various topics concerning him. But here's John Abraham unplugged…

  • Is he or is he not a part of SALAAM | NAMASTE? Reportedly, he makes a 'surprise appearance' in the film.

  • I read that somewhere! I really don't know how this rumor originated in the first place. I would love to be a part of a Yash Raj film, but the fact remains that I am not a part of SALAAM | NAMASTE. Having said that, I'd like to add that I am in no mood to do special appearances anymore. I only made an exception for John Matthew Mathan's film [starring Ajay Devgan, Shahid Kapoor] recently.

  • John Matthew Mathan's film -- when did he sign that? Did Bipasha suggest his name to the film-maker, since she happens to be an integral part of the film?

  • I play John Abraham in the film [smiles], it was one day's work. And no, Bipasha didn't suggest my name to John Matthew. In fact, John wasn't even aware that Bipasha and I are seeing each other. The day after I shot with John Matthew, he went up to Bipasha and apologized for not knowing that she and I are together.

  • On Karan Johar signing the actor for three films. True?

  • False! I haven't signed any of Karan's projects after KAAL. Yes, he did approach me for a brief role in KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA, but he subsequently called to say that the role wouldn't do justice to my talent. It was Karan's decision entirely, I wasn't playing truant… I did meet Soham [the director of KAAL] some time back. He's working on a script for Dharma Productions [Karan's production house], but nothing is confirmed yet.

  • On doing a number of ad films.

  • Yeah, I have done a few ads of late. But I've decided to space out my ad films in such a way that no two ad films are released simultaneously. I don't want to be an over-exposed face. Also, I've decided on the products I do not wish to be associated with.

  • On suddenly becoming a 'film buff'.

  • I never watched movies till I became an actor. A lot of people won't believe this, but it's a fact. However, I have an impressive DVD collection today. I pick up DVDs wherever I go and like to catch on the movies whenever I get free time.
I prefer watching world cinema. The Korean and Iranian cinema is what appeals to me today. They are far more innovative and interesting in concepts. I haven't really watched several Hindi films of late.

  • On his next release, GARAM MASALA.

  • I enjoyed doing the film. I always wanted to work in a comedy film and with Priyadarshan in particular. Priyan's style is different from the rest. He lets you perform the way you want to and when you check the monitor after the shot, you ask yourself in disbelief, Did I really do that? I also love David Dhawan movies and would like to see myself in his flicks one day.
