Ramji Londonwaley: Promo Watch Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Gaurav Malani, August 16, 2005 - 05:00 IST

Lagaan! Whom does the movie remind you of at first thoughts? Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowariker or A.R.Rehman! But somewhere amidst all the biggies was overshadowed a name called Sanjay Dayma, one of the screenplay writers of the film. Lagaan undoubtedly was one of the most convincing and riveting screenplays of Hindi cinema. So when Dayma turned to direction with Ramji Londonwaley, one can expect him to come up with an entertaining fare.

Interestingly for his debut venture Sanjay Dayma seeks inspiration from a Tamil film Nala Damyanthi and adapts it into Hindi. However the lead actor from both versions remains the same - R.Madhavan. Madhavan, the popular south Indian superstar couldn't make it big in Hindi films with Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein and Dil Vil Pyar Vyar. But from the look and feel of Ramji Londonwaley, it appears like Madhavan will make it big with this one. He did that with the Tamil version and has the potential to recreate the magic in Bollywood too.

Ramji Londonwaley (earlier titled Bawarchi) is a heart warming tale of a cook from Bihar. Madhavan plays the title role of Ramji who is an expert cook from a small village in Bihar, who is forced to go to London to work as a chef to get the dowry money required for his sister's marriage. But soon he realizes that he's a complete misfit in their world. That's until he wins the heart of one and all over there.

A lot of food recipes, language chaos, immigration conspiracy and unassuming love story follows. The trailer is also packed with a load of funny gags wherein the bucolic Ramji has to adjust with his new lifestyle in London from English toilets to frenchie underwears.

Small time actress Samita Bangargi who was seen in movies like Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai and Shaadi Ka Laddoo gets her first solo female big-break over here. Others in the cast include many character artists from the Lagaan team including Raj Zutshi, Dayashankar Pandey, Akhilendra Mishra and Aditya Lakhia apart from Harsh Chhaya and Satish Shah.

Wait till Ramji himself enters Bollywood to serve his delicious recipe.
