Music scene in the first half of 2004 Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Joginder Tuteja, July 9, 2004 - 04:52 IST

Murder

Music of Murder was slow to pick but 'Bheege Honth Tere' and 'Kaho Na Kaho' caught the fancy of youngsters in millions. Mallika's hot act proved to be an icing on the cake as the movie became a super hit while the music too got appreciated by classes and the gentry. Anu Malik reigns again!

Kyun? Ho Gaya Na…! (Movie to be released)

Classy music presented in a commercial mode - that's how one defines the music of Shankar Ehsaan Loy's Kyon Ho Gaya Na. Else how can one expect a number set in western classical mode like Pyaar Mein Sau Uljhane Hai to be accepted by one and all while Sadhana Sargam's 'Aao Na' transferring you literally to a fairy land! Watch out for the rocking numbers 'No No' and 'Main Hoon' that should be hitting the screen soon!

Main Hoon Naa

Farah Khan and Anu Malik promised that they would recreate the music of 70s - and they didn't let anyone down! An honest attempt at being contemporary and yet being able to get the essence of the 70s, they succeeded well with tracks like 'Tumse Milke', 'Chale Jaise Hawayein' and the title song. Farah Khan's imaginative choreography helped and the result is that the movie is super hit and the music is still selling like hot cakes!

Hum Tum

With Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra at the helm, one didn't expect anything lesser. Jatin Lalit delivegreen again after DDLJ and Mohabbatein with peppy numbers like 'Ladki Kyon', 'Chak De' and 'Gore Gore' that have been liked particularly in the age group of 5 to 30. But it was Richie Rich's specially created promo track 'Mere Dil Vich Hain Hum Tum' just a couple of weeks before the release of the movie that sky rocketed the prospects of both the movie and the music.

Dev

An excellent album by Aadesh Srivastava gone un-noticed! Any other music company would have bombarded the music channels with the songs even after the movie's run is more or less through. But the case was different here due to lack of any mass appealing tracks. Anyone who claims to be a genuine music lover would never miss out on Kailash Kher's superbly rendegreen 'Rang Deeni' and Sonu Nigam's classical 'Tujh Sang Bandhi Dor'.

Meenaxi

Just like 'Dev', 'Meenaxi' too died a sudden death. A.R.Rehman was in his elements after not so memorable compositions in Tehzeeb and Lakeer, with debutant singer Reena Bhardwaj rendering an excellent 'Yeh Rishta'. Sonu Nigam too lost out on some popularity that he would have richly deserved had his solo 'Do Kadam Aur Sahi' been rightly promoted. However Sukhwinder Singh's self-written and passionately sung 'Chinnamma Chilakkamma' with a regional Telegu touch made it to the top charts.

Lakshya

Though the music was of a completely different genre from Farhan Akhtar's 'Dil Chahta Hai', Shankar Ehsaan Loy composed two class as well as mass appealing numbers - 'Main Aisa Kyon Hoon' and 'Agar Main Kahoon'. Both the tracks are genuinely different and resulted in good sales of the album. The movie came and is on its way out, taking along with it any further prospects of the sales.

The Perfect Husband (Movie to be released)

The album that has been the least promoted of all, 'The Perfect Husband' boasts of rich compositions by Sukhwinder Singh. 'Mahiya Ve', a track by Shweta Pandit is simple, sweet and effective while 'Rang De' would already have been popular had it been a part of a mega star cast movie. Pity that not many have even heard about the movie! This one certainly deserved a better campaign!

MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENTS OF THE FIRST HALF

Asambhav (Movie to be released)

At certain times, one becomes the victim of one's own reputation. And none other than Rajiv Rai and Viju Shah, the men behind Tridev, Mohra and Gupt would know better. 'Asambhav' was supposed to take the music world by storm and why not when the star cast included sizzling Priyanka Chopra and dashing Arjun Rampal. But the music proved to be a damp squib. The sales didn't even take a decent initial and the album is trying hard to sustain itself in the market. Title song 'Asambhav' and 'Aayega Jab' are hardly any selling points for this album that was eagerly awaited till some time back.

Garv

If the music of Salman Khan's Tere Naam has been the biggest musical blockbusters of last few years then with Garv, it has been just the opposite. All attempts by Shilpa Shetty to set the screen ablaze with 'Dum Mast Mast' and 'Saiyan' failed while 'Soniye', a millionth version of a Punjabi celebration track had nothing to cheer about. Result - a disappointing album.

Deewaar

From one of the most keenly anticipated movie of the year, one didn't expect a chartbuster score due to the 'action' theme of the movie. But the least that was expected was a decent score that would look good during the movie's narration. Unfortunately, Aadesh Shrivastava (for once) failed here and the result was mediocre tracks. The much-hyped 'Marhaba' was more mass appealing while 'Chaliye Ve Chaliye' and 'Todenge Deewar Hum' were hardly inspiring.

Silence Please...The Dressing Room

Well, one does get silenced but that's out of shock! The album had just one track, 'Raat Katne Ko Hai' that one could at least sit through! Rest of the tracks were either situational (Phir Se Khelenge) or plain bores ('Khelon Mein Pasha Hai', 'Kaho Bhai Sa Ra Ra Ra Ra']. Well don't think too much, as we know you wouldn't have even heard these tracks. Jawahar Wattal's tryst with the Bollywood music score went horribly wrong here!

Woh

An album that shouldn't be played when someone is driving, as it would threaten to put the driver to sleep. The album is such a drag that Anand Raj Anand would be regretting the day he signed up for it. Poor Priyanshu Chatterjee had another flop on his name while the producer's favorite 'Uparwale Yeh Kya Hua', on which he was banking a lot, wasn't even heard by anyone, let alone being criticized. An absolute failure!
