“I don't want any compliments” - Salman Khan
By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 26, 2004 - 07:09 IST
Whether for a mass-oriented film like Garv or an issue-based cinema like Phir Milenge, Salman Khan has his own loyal fan following. The macho Khan is looking forward to his next release Mujhse Shaadi Karogi where he teams up with Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra for the first time.
In an exclusive interview to IndiaFM, Salman opens his heart on everything from his next release to the media tagging him hero for saving two lives last week.
You are working with Akshay Kumar for the first time. How was the experience like?
It was a good experience working with him. We worked like friends, like brothers. Prior to this we worked together in shows. The film is on one-upmanship - nehle pe dehla. But in real life, it was made in very good spirit. There wasn't any competition.
Tell us about your character Sameer in the film?
Sameer is a short-tempered man. He cannot tolerate anything wrong. Woh mooh se kam aur haath se zyada baat karta hai. He wants to marry and whenever he feels something like this is about to happen, something untoward happens. His intentions are good but the outcome is bad.
Both Akshay Kumar and David Dhawan are said to have a great sense of comic timing. How did you match your timing with them?
I know about their timing. They have put in a lot of hard work and dedication. Mine… well it just happened. I myself do not realize what I do. It just comes. Nothing is rehearsed. Nothing is practiced.
Just recently you helped three guys who met with an accident…
If you think taking someone to the hospital is extraordinary, I think it's embarrassing. I feel shameful when someone asks me if you have done something extraordinary. I have done nothing. People keep praying all the time, worshipping all the time but when someone is in real trouble, nobody comes forward. It's embarrassing that people say 'you are a real life hero'. It's stupid. Everyone should do it. I don't see any of my friends saying me that you have done an amazing thing. I don't want any compliments. Actually I have done that for a selfish reason just thinking that my friends, my family members or I could have been in the victim's place.
What kind of a role interests you the most?
It depends on the mood. Like today I am shooting for a song and I am in no mood to dance. If I get to play someone who sleeps and sleeps then I could play that character very well. If I move out of the house in a happy mood, I like to do comedy. If someone irritates me, then an action scene would be better (laughs). If I am depressed, an emotional scene will go good. I can't play opposite to my mood. I am not amongst those who do not carry forward their mood to the sets. I cannot play two roles like this is Salman Khan's personal life and this is his professional life. How do people switch moods, I do not understand.
What things make Salman Khan happy?
Goodness, positive energy, truth, good people, people helping each other, people being nice to people, people being honest. I stay away from fraud, slyness, and corruption. Now everyone has his own thoughts and maybe mine is wrong. Some people are very happy with stealing, killing and frauds.
You had been offered to play the role of Lord Ram. How much truth is it in the news?
Yes, it's true. They are working on the script so that there is no controversy later on. It's going to be a film more for kids because the character I am playing is very correct. And that is why we are making Ram so that children grow up to be the most amazing brother, the most amazing son, the most amazing husband, the most amazing ruler and the most amazing person like Ram. It is going to be done very simply on a very large scale with lot of principles, values so that children are educated.
