In an exclusive interview to IndiaFM, sex siren Neha Dhupia cracks a battery of hot and razor sharp questions about her hooker flick Julie.
Tell us about the character of Julie.
Julie is a simple innocent character from Goa. Unaware of the outside world, she gets trapped. The movie captures the journey of this girl who survives the tricky situations and circumstances that stare at her.
How did you deal with factors like family reaction and audience response while shooting for the steamy sequences?
Had I let these factors bother me, work would have suffered. Why just family and friends, the lightman watching the shoot and the crowd present on the sets could bother me! But nah, that’s not Neha. Professionalism demands discipline out of you. So, I got on to the set, shut the world outside me and give each shot a 100 percent.
How was the over-all experience of working on Julie?
Enriching in one word. Post shooting, I am a reformed person, more in tune with my emotions. Punctuality and professionalism are a few things that the movie has taught me.
Qayamat had a hit soundtrack. How do you rate the music of Julie?
Himesh Reshamiyya has scored the music for this film. The tracks have an Indian texture to it. I don’t know about others but I certainly like listening to them.
A particular scene in the movie has you sprawled on the bed with things scribbled on your back. It has stirred a lot of curiosity, how did you manage to shoot it?
Oh, it was physically very tough and required a lot of patience. The scene was shot at a farmhouse in Delhi. Freezing cold at minus one degree, I had to lie patiently until the graphic design was done. And then I would immediately jump into warmers.
Was there any particular shot that was tough to handle?
There was this particular shot that require me to pet a dog. Since I am not fond of dogs at all, I would impatiently wait for the shot to be okayed and then get rid of it immediately. That didn’t go well with me.
How was it working with Deepak Shivdasani, your director?
It was tremendous. Prior to Julie, Deepak has also directed Baaghi and Pehchaan. Julie was very clear in his head. He knew her character. This kind of clarity is both insightful and helpful in portraying the role. Hence it was a learning rope all the way. Very satisfying I would say.
The tagline says: Beautiful mind. Bold profession. What do you think of it?
I think the tagline complements the film totally. Julie is a girl with a golden heart who finds herself in a bold profession like the flesh trade.
According to you, should prostitution be legalized?
I am not sure about legalization. But to answer your question, I totally endorse the message of Julie, that women in this trade too are equals and deserve to be dealt with respect and dignity.
Tell us a bit about the other characters in the film?
Priyanshu Chatterjee and Sanjay Kapoor play very interesting roles in the movie. The entry of each character adds an exciting layer to the plot and helps the movie progress. Priyanshu is the rationale voice in the movie.
Is Julie inspired or based on a previous source.
[Firmly] Julie is inspired by only factor - the emotions of a woman in the hooker profession. A lot of groundwork has happened. We had an extensive three months of script reading to understand the mind frame of a person in such a situation. We tried to peep into her heart and not just copy clich?annerisms.
It’s a first that a contract has been signed between the director and actor. What is your take on it?
Yes. I think it was a very wise thing to do to avoid any kind of hassles later on. Neither did they overstep their contract and neither was I allowed to play foul. It was a fair deal and went smooth.
