Priyanka Chopra speaks about Asambhav
By IndiaFM News Bureau, July 12, 2004 - 03:11 IST
Tell us something about the movie Asambhav.
Asambhav starts with the story of two characters. The story initiates with the introduction of the first character that is a commando played by Arjun and proceeds further with the introduction of my character. I am playing the character of a nightclub dancer who aspires to be a star singer one day. Both the stories proceed simultaneously on two separate tracks and intersect in Switzerland where both the characters meet each other and discover something. This is how the story proceeds. There was definitely a lot to do in this fully action oriented film which has no signs of romance at all. There's neither a single romantic scene nor any romantic song. You will see me shooting with the guns in this movie. It was really very interesting working in this film.
You have played a similar character in Kismat. What is your opinion about the similarity or difference between these two characters?
There's no similarity at all between these two characters. In Kismat, I was already a celebrity who was an established singer. That character dealt with the trauma of a celebrity who had to suffer an increasing number of problems caused by Bobby. In Asambhav, I am not a celebrity. But my biggest aspiration to be a celebrity becomes the root cause of my problems. Without thinking to and fro, I readily accept the deal to perform 3 to 4 shows in Switzerland completely unknown to the trap being laid for me at Switzerland. It's only at Switzerland that I get to meet Arjun who somehow manages to free me from this trap. That makes playing both these similar yet dissimilar characters very interesting.
Was there any specific scene that required Switzerland to be selected as the most appropriate location for the shoot?
Not really. Switzerland is said to be the mother of romance but it was quite disappointing for us because we did not shoot a single romantic scene amidst the beauties of Switzerland. But we really enjoyed shooting in Locarno, which is the Italian side of Switzerland and had real fun interacting with their people and enjoying the delicious meals. We somehow thought that the cool climate of Switzerland would be very pleasing as compared to the sunny atmosphere in Mumbai but to our destiny we found Switzerland really hot with 39 degree Celsius during our shooting schedule. My mother and younger brother accompanied me and we all really enjoyed these two months in Switzerland. We had real fun shooting in the heat of Switzerland.
Tell us something about your experience in Switzerland.
When Arjun informed me about skydiving and bungee jumping in Switzerland, I immediately asked Rajiv to let me enjoy both. But Rajiv persuaded me to go for it only after the entire shooting was complete. But Rajiv' s persuasion had no effect on my instincts and I thoroughly enjoyed skydiving wherein I managed to go 16,000 feet down to earth through the parachute after reaching so high in the sky. In my excitement, I disclosed my skydiving experience to everyone on the sets. And immediately after hearing about my skydiving experience, Arjun got really annoyed just because I had enjoyed the ride before he did. He even remarked egoistically that being the hero of the film, he was supposed to enjoy skydiving first instead of the heroine. I also experienced bungee jumping and believe me, going about 700 feet down just like the one performed by Pierce Brosnan in his movie James Bond was really crazy. I suppose even Arjun must have had tried his hand later to have the similar experience.
Tell us something about your experience of working with Arjun.
Arjun is a prankster who creates so much of fun on the sets that it's really fun working with him. Arjun had worked with Rajiv before but still they all co-operated so well with me that I never felt that it was my first film with them.
Tell us something about your experience of working with Naseeruddin Shah.
I have many scenes with Naseerji because in the movie, Naseerji has a romantic inclination towards in me. In fact, the very first scene we did together was a little difficult one perhaps because the scene required me to reject his proposal. Naseerji is not only a known actor but also the most respected actor who has been revered as a legend right from childhood days. Naseerji would make me feel really comfortable especially during the scenes that required interesting dialogue between both of us. It was really good working with Naseerji.
Tell us something about the music of the film.
I think this movie has brilliant music with techno effects that makes the music very young, vibrant and energetic. The best part about the music is its maximum use of rhythms, percussions and beats that would make the music really party sort of, but at the same time each song would be totally different from the other. The music of this film is really nice.
What are your expectations from this movie?
I do not expect anything from any of my movies. I truly believe that you should try your utmost to give the best performance and leave the rest to destiny. I just hope that even the audience enjoys as much as I did while working in this movie. I just hope for the best.
Rajiv Rai as a director always believes at trying something new. He directs his movie with 20 cameras on the sets. Tell us something about your experience of facing 20 cameras for the first time.
Yes. We had a lot of cameras. Each scene had minimum seven cameras. That really bothered us initially because we were totally unaware about which camera we were supposed to face, completely unknown about the most appropriate lens and frame. But Rajiv' s assurance to face just the actor and ignore the cameras solved the dilemma. It was really interesting working in this digitally made film with a very different music. In fact, I even told Rajiv that his act of using so many cameras has spoilt me as such because when I returned, the customary use of just one camera always left me feel dejected.
Do you like watching cricket?
I do not even miss a single match.
Tell us something about your favorite cricketer.
It's a difficult question. My favorite cricketer is Rahul Dravid because I think his consistency is very important for our team .His entry brings stability in the game. Watching cricket on television is much better because you get to see even the close-ups and reactions in your own home, on your own pouch with your delicious food unlike the stadium where the real enjoyment happens only outside.
Your fans would like to know about how far do the girls enjoy cricket?
In fact people don't know about the fact that there's a women's cricket team!
