Kareena Kapoor speaks on Dev
By IndiaFM News Bureau, June 3, 2004 - 07:39 IST
Kareena Kapoor has gone in for a complete changeover from a flamboyant Poo image to the no make-up look in Dev. From her frothy romantic roles to a serious one and her much talked-about smooch to Fardeen Khan to her singing a song in Dev, Bebo talks everything in an exclusive interview to IndiaFM
Your look in Dev seems to be very non-glamorous just like the one in Chameli. Is your character in Dev demanding such a look? Tell us something about your role in the movie.
When Govindji offered me a role in his movie I felt deeply honored and refusing it seemed to be just out of question in spite of the role being that of a non-glamorous girl. Since Govindji is not a hard-core commercial filmmaker and does not believe in uplifting the glamorous image of his heroines through mini skirts or western hairstyles, working with him was a challenge to me. I feel working in the movie has proved to be an opportunity to me perhaps because my role has a completely non-glamorous look, something which the audience really does not expect from Kareena Kapoor. That's the reason I accepted a different challenge by opting for this movie.
Tell us something about the specialty of the character you are playing.
I am playing the role of a simple Muslim girl who is extremely sensitive. The movie actually is a cop drama and deals with the character of Amitji, Omji, Fardeen and me and how these four characters come together in a particular situation. The story is the specialty of this movie.
Tell us something about your experience while shooting this movie. We are sure that working with stars like Amitji and Omji must have proved to be quite a learning experience for you. Please comment.
This is my second film with Amitji after K3G and it's really nice working with him. Since childhood, I have been watching Amitji's movie and believe me even shooting two scenes with him in the movie made me really nervous. According to me, my scene with Amitji is one of the best scenes of the movie. As far as Omji is concerned, I have not met him on the sets yet because we don't have a single scene in the movie together.
What areas do you deeply focus on while selecting a movie?
Right now Indian film industry is running on a different dimension. Nowadays every film is being accepted irrespective of whether any commercial aspect is attached to it. The dimension keeps on changing its mould be it commercial or something other than that. My aim is to assure the directors that Kareena can suit any type of role. I do not want to typecast myself as a cute glamorous girl neither I want my directors to consider me just for stereotype roles. I want the directors to feel that Kareena can fit into any role.
Don't you fear the risk associated with the sudden change from the glamorous image that has already made a place into every one's heart. Please comment.
Obviously not. Because this year if I have Yuva with me, then to break that image I have Dev. And then again after Dev I have Fidaa, which is an out and out commercial film wherein I am performing an ultra glamorous role. Both Bewafa and Abbas Mustan's Aitraaz are commercial entertainers with me in the lead role. I don't want anyone to typecast me that Kareena is only for commercial genre. That's the reason I am doing different types of roles.
You are singing for the first time in Dev. Tell us something about it.
Govindji's insistence and his faith in me as an artist who could stand well as a singer too made me accept his offer to sing in his movie. According to me, I do not have a melodious voice but since the song itself is not very melodious and simply carries soft emotions of her expressions to herself, the singing experience did not seem difficult. I really hope it works.
Tell us something about your experience as a singer right in front of the mike.
It was really a very nice feeling when I found myself right in front of the mike singing a song. But one thing is for sure. It is only after singing I realized that I could only stand in front of the mike for dubbing and never for singing again. I cannot ever pursue a career in singing.
You have worked with Mr. Bachchan and Fardeen before. So while working in this movie what was the overall chemistry between you, Amitji, Omji and Fardeen. Please comment.
I have not worked much with Bachchanji in this movie except for the two scenes that are shot between him and me. With Omji I have not done a single scene. But definitely it's really a very big honor for me to work with such great stalwarts in the movie directed by Govind Nihalani. This is my third film with Fardeen after Khushi and Fidaa, which is scheduled for August release. Fardeen is good friend of mine and working with him was really a good experience.
Tell us something about how significant is the role of the very first director in an artist's career.
Yes. Definitely. The very first director has the most significant role to play in an artist's carer. J. P Dutta offered me such a superb role in my very first film Refugee that it made my critics and fans adore me and have complete faith in me. That's the reason I agreed to do L.O.C in spite of my role being just two scenes in the entire movie. My relationship with J.P Dutta is so special that even now if he approaches me for any of his films, no matter even if my role is too short to perform, I will not deny him. I realize the significance of my career that started with his camera under his direction and I really admire his decision to opt me for Refugee at a time when I knew nothing.
Apart from the films, we would like to know about your friendship with Shahid.
I don't want to talk about it at the moment.
Have you ever aspired to perform a role in a Khakee uniform?
Not now atleast. Perhaps after five to six years I shall look forward to it.
