Promo Watch: Sarhad Paar
By Gaurav Malani, June 28, 2004 - 02:23 IST
Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Tabu, Mahima Chaudhary, Chandrachur Singh and Rahul Dev.
Trailer duration: 60 seconds
The trailer of Sarhad Paar opens on an emotional note and flashes conventional words like Family, Nation, Faith et al. 'Some things are worth fighting for' says the movie tagline. Sanjay Dutt plays Ranjit Singh, an Indian Army officer, and for the first time will be seen in the character of a Punjabi Jatt Sardar onscreen (something for which Sunny Deol is the usual ideal choice).
Tabu plays Pammi, wife of Ranjit Singh and for the first time is paired opposite the deadly Dutt. With Tabu's pungent Punjabi look, the two do seem to form a good onscreen pair. The film also stars Mahima Chaudhary (as Sanju's sister) and Chandrachur Singh. (The trio had worked earlier in Raj Kanwar's Daag - The Fire). Raman Kumar directs the film who came up with forgettable flicks like Raja Bhaiya and Jodi Kya Banayi Wah Wah Ramji last year. This can be termed his biggest attempt so far.
The movie has been under making for quite some time (read years) now and as the title suggests is essentially based on Indo-Pak relations. The theme was in full swing a couple of years back but needless to say is not really topical in the present pro-Pakistan scenario.
Rahul Dev plays the archetypal Pakistani terrorist who incarcerates Sanjay Dutt. His long hair look (of his early days) confirms the delay in the film's making. A scene depicts him chopping the Jatt Dutt's hair (while still imprisoned) much against their ritual rights.
Some predictable action sequences come along in the promo with crooning of a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sound alike in the background. Sanjay Dutt's sword flinging fights that follow, very much remind of Sunny Deol's acts in Gadar, et al. The trailer also cashes on the names of award-winning writer duo of Robin Bhatt and Akash Khurana.
Sarhad Paar does bear a mass-appealing look and may attract fans of hard-core action films and Sanjay Dutt aficionados.
