“There are times when I feel like a complete loser” - Tusshar Kapoor Click here to add this article to My Clips

By IndiaFM News Bureau, October 27, 2004 - 03:06 IST

Instantly likeable, that's Tusshar Kapoor. Well-behaved, cordial and simple, the Khakee kid is very unlike your filmy brat. The young lad has given two delightful performances in Khakee and Gayab in the bollywood calendar year of 2004. In a t?-?? with Tusshar, IndiaFM talks to the star about movies and more…

Two important films Khakee and Gayab. Unfortunately both missed the bullseye. How does Tusshar battle box-office failure?
For one, it wasn't a box-office failure for me. Khakee made some decent money while Gayab too kept its nose above water. If the producers made some money and the distributors did a break-even, the net result is positive. Besides my performance has come in for appreciation too.

You came up with splendid performances in both. How has the response been?
The response has been tremendous. Very encouraging. People still talk about the climax shot of Khakee and my scenes with Amitji & Akshay. The feedback's been more than positive.

Like Vishnu Prasad in Gayab, have you felt like a loser at times?
For sure, I have had my ups and downs. There are times when I feel like a complete loser and then there are patches when I come out tops.

One director who did like to work with again?
Raj Santoshi undoubtedly! And hopefully in a solo starrer.

Pick an actress that you would like to co-star with?
Hmm…I would have loved to work with Meena Kumari and Sridevi. Amongst the current crop of actresses, everyone's good with their job. But not really longing to work with anyone.

What's your approach to acting?
Well, I take effort to understand what transpires in the head of my character. And I do rehearse to get the emotion on camera. But I do not plan the shot. Once the camera is switched on, I simply act. So mine's a blend of both spontaneity & method.

Any role that required a lot of homework
Gayab got me to do some homework. I met up with some Sales guys to learn their talk-walk and behavior. Also, tried looking and watching some nerdy characters to build the look of Vishnu.

One role that comes closest to the real Tusshar
I can't seem to remember any role that comes close to the real me. Nah…none as yet.

Ditto Jeetuji, you have worked with South banners too. Draw us some differences.
I am not particularly fond of working with them. They are outdated in terms of styling. When cinema is getting more and more global, you cannot run an execution that dates back to the eighties. But, no complains because I got to learn what not to do.

Give us a scene that tickles you till date
Well there was this film, 'Baap Numbari Beta Dus Numbari' where the father-son duo make money by conning people. There is a sequence where they run a fake travel agency and end up sending people to Madh Island on the ticket to Dubai! I think that was damn funny!

Women find you very cute, what do you say to that?
Wow! Then I guess they should keep the word-of-mouth on so that my popularity soars!

Ala Abhishek, would you do an item number if offered?
Sure, why not. By the way, my songs Nikamma and Ding Dong were almost item numbers.

One actress you think is hot
I think Yana is pretty. Kareena is fabulous too.

Balaji has come out with two films so far. What do you think went wrong as far as box office success is concerned?
Well, any new venture needs time to prosper. We were new and had to go through the learning curve. Also, I guess the next time around, luck shall favor us.

Tell us about your forthcoming film, Kya Kool Hain Hum
It's a laugh riot. Kya Kool.. is a naughty film with very interesting & sexy situations. A mad comedy, it deals with mistaken identities. There are two characters who are complete losers and they inevitably find themselves in the weirdest of situations.

You role…
I play the character of Rahul. He's your everyday guy. He earns his livelihood by conning people. Rahul has a mad side to him yet is very endearing. Was good fun doing the role.

What are you doing in Sipahee?
I am Avinash in Sipahee. Out here, I am an aspiring actor. Very emotional deep within, he constantly tries to flash a happy-go-lucky image.

What's on your agenda next?
Apart from the films that I have spoken about, there are a couple of projects that I am discussing. Once things get more concrete, you can have the details.
