“Star power is overshadowing content” – Shahid Kapoor: Part 2

en Bollywood News “Star power is overshadowing content” – Shahid Kapoor: Part 2

Shahid Kapoor

On screen, all traces of Shahid Kapoor disappeared when I saw Kaminey - he looked like Charlie, then in a second he sounded like Guddu, and projected Charlie's single-minded determination with a force that has the edge to conquer the world. For me, Kaminey was a role of a lifetime for Shahid Kapoor. The question is - Will Haider follow the suit? The only difference between the last time I met the actor and this time is - He's got a HIT under his belt. But it's only under the roof of Shahid Kapoor, that I found out he's got much more than just a HIT - his confidence is back, and like I said when I met him for the first time outside Adlabs - Film City, right after the screening of Kaminey - "It's time I bet on the winning horse again".

“Star power is overshadowing content” – Shahid Kapoor: Part 2

Part 2 of my exclusive tete-a-tete with Shahid Kapoor continues...

What do we expect from Haider?

I love Vishal Bhardwaj. He has given me the best role of my career. Kaminey is one of the most significant films of my career too. But Haider is going to be special because it’s an adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. Haider is going to be a dark, intense, gritty and a dramatic movie. Kaminey was more pulp in its feel.

With the invent of '24', will you be a part of television series in India if an opportunity arises?

Television is a huge platform right now and I think no actor should ignore it. But it's very important what you do in it. If there is something that's different and for the masses, I’d love to do it. We all go on T.V. shows to promote our movies and that’s a proof that how popular T.V. shows are getting. It’s a huge medium.

Now that a certain genre has worked in your favour, will you continue doing that genre repeatedly?

I loved doing R...Rajkumar and I am definitely doing another one sometime soon but in a different way. I don’t think I can do the same thing again. Every genre reaches a point where it needs to be rediscovered, and that kind of happens when the genre becomes extremely popular and a lot of bad versions of accepted films start coming out and it gets really cluttered and people start getting a sense of fatigue. It happened with a love stories 7 to 8 years back. It's important to recognize the appetite an audience has for a certain genre. It's vital to do a good film in that genre and not just because that genre is popular. If I get a good film in a mass genre, I'd be happy to do it but I won’t blindly do a mass film because R...Rajkumar worked.

Where do you think your career graph has reached?

Everyone’s career has a graph and you need to reach to that potential. Out in the West, the 50+ actors are all doing Expendables. But before reaching the fifties and sixties, most of them had done 'solo' hero projects too. Out in Hollywood, there is no ego and big actors work with each other. I don’t have any qualms like that. I'd be happy to work with another co-actor if an opportunity arrives and if I feel the rest of the cast and story is right. But it's very rare out here that such offers come because producers think of budgets too and the date problems with actors. But I’m sure in years to come all this will change. Bollywood is evolving with every passing year. I’d love to do an action genre sometime, something more serious and engaging.

Where do you see Bollywood in 2014?

It would be very interesting to see what happens to Bollywood once 4G will enter the country because it will be completely change the way people consume software. Entertainment is pretty much software too. I don’t know what will happen but I think a lot of content will be consumed in many different ways and we should all acknowledge that. It is the future. Big-ticket films will always be big. There are certain films you want to see on the big screen. There are certain experiences you have to experience on the 70 mm screen, like Gravity. You can watch a cricket match sitting at home on your 51-inch television where everything is clear and you can see the finer details, but it can never be compared to the feeling of going to the stadium and watching the match with 40,000 people. That's why the big films in the West are - Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Transformers, etc. It's the big-ticket films that’ll always work, be it in Hollywood or Bollywood.

Can we for once really mean when we say 'Content is King'?

We keep saying that content is king all the time but the fact is that it is. It’s just too much star power that's overshadowing content I feel. Look at some of the writing gems we had in the last two years in Bollywood. I loved Paan Singh Tomar even though I didn't know who he was before I saw the film. The writing on television series in America has proved it - 'Game of Thrones', 'The Newsroom', 'House of Cards', etc. In days to come we will have a better ratio as far as content and star power is concerned.
