    Aloo Chaat and Punjabi Humour
Monday, March 2, 2009
Jai Ho!!

I have to start my blog with these two words whose resonance is being heard all over the globe. I am sure all of us have heard and read enough congratulatory notes all over, but I personally feel the real impact of the Oscar wins would be felt in times to come. Although a lot of people have said that the Oscars are inherently American Awards which is true but winning an Oscar is an indication of the fact that Indian talent today is comparable to the best, thus the value of Indians in the world of cinema has truly risen, and is here to stay and grow.

Now moving on, I am really looking forward to the release of my film Aloo Chaat on the 13th of March. Honestly, it really is a wonderfully feeling to see the last one year of efforts finally seeing the light of the day. I have been asked this question earlier also about how do you exactly feel so close to your release (excitement, nervousness, tension)... to which I have always said there is no feeling at all. It may seem strange but true. The feelings are so heightened that one stops feeling at all. There is a feeling where you just want your work to come out as soon as possible.

One of the more interesting facets of making a film is that it never goes as planned. Locations get cancelled at the last minute, actors get injured, it rains when you least expect it etc, etc, and at such times it's all about thinking on your feet. All these speed breakers actually make the journey even more exhilarating. Unless you are challenged you cannot challenge your own self.

Aloo Chaat is a bit of a homecoming for me. It's a film seeped in the Punjabi way of being, and I am a Punjabi Sikh myself. In that sense, I felt like coming back to the confines of my home in Delhi. I seriously believe Punjabi's are the funniest species on the planet, and I have attempted to capture that very essence of Punjabi humor in my film.

In my opinion it's not an easy job to make people laugh. Through this film I have tried to put a smile on your face. I am glad that the release of my film is so close to the festival of Holi. As a child I associated Holi with myriad hues, fun and yes a lot of pranks that had us in peals of laughter, and I feel Aloo Chaat has the same ingredients. Here's hoping you carry this mood with you to the theatres.

Cheers!

Right from his memorable school days, Robby always knew one thing - he was never going to have this much fun ever again. After graduation, he was quite clear that he needed a career that would consume him. It had to be more than work.

It was at that juncture where a successful break in television became the stepping-stone towards an exciting journey ahead. It was at this stage when he decided to set up Red Ice Films, a production house producing high quality television commercials and features films. At 27 Robby made his first film – Samay. Followed by producing Yahaan, which was shot in Kashmir. In between producing and directing feature films, there was always going back to his first love ‘ad films’ then came his directorial Mp3 –Mera Pehla Pehla Pyar, a film about the adolescent growing up years

Next on the cards is a film called Aloo Chaat of which the principal shooting has just been wrapped up, and going on the floors on the April 16. It is a film tentatively titled Khusar Prasad Ka Bhoot.
