Its Not Over - We Need Action
Monday, December 8, 2008
So what now ? So much has been said, so many people have been condemned, we’ve even spoken for and against the spirit and resilience, politicians have resigned, maybe others will too, but in all this are we losing sight of what actually needs to be done ? Instead of going against the terrorists and the people behind them we are being diverted by petty politics within and against political parties. The great Indian political tamasha continues !

Until we change our policy towards terrorism and terrorists nothing else will make a difference. To do that we needs answers and accountability from our politicians and ofcourse action ! We want to know who’s behind the attacks ? We want to know what’s going to be done against those people ? We want to know who masterminded the planned military operation in Mumbai ? We want to know where the terrorists were trained ? We want to know who funded this operation ? We want to know why intelligence reports were ignored ?

Once we have answers to the questions we then need action. We need action taken on and against the people who did this. By action I certainly do not mean war. The Pakistan President has said they will support us in all ways possible, let this not just be talk, if they actually mean it, let them arrest and deport terrorist groups and underworld elements in Pakistan. This is the time for not just India, but for Pakistan to prove that it truly is against terror and terrorists, but for that we need to be strong, we need to send a very strong message to Pakistan and any other country harboring terrorists that we will not tolerate it any more, we want terror training camps shut down or we will shut them down, we want terrorists driven out or we will come and drive them out.

India is a military super power, we need to use this strength correctly and cautiously, without the option of war.

We have gone nuclear and used all our political might to join the elite nuclear club, but we sadly lack in basic security within the country. In most developed and developing countries every constable has a gun, in India only inspector level and above have guns, the rest have lathis ! What will the cops do with lathis ? What can an inspector do against AK47’s with pistols ? We need to equip our police force with arms and ammunition that will be better than what terrorists use. Our police force with no up to date equipment is one of the best in the world, imagine how good they will be if they have the best equipment in the world, they will certainly be the best in the world, lets give them that, they deserve it, they need it.

Our borders that have been time and again proved to be very porous need to be sealed. The armed forces need to be given whatever they require to seal our borders on land, air and sea.

In every mall, in every theatre, in every hotel, in every club, we need to have x-ray machines. Metal detectors are clearly not enough. We as citizens need to understand that 26/11 has changed the way we live forever and we must accept it and not get irritated when we have to wait in that security line. Our hotels, malls and theaters will not be safe till they have x ray machines and machine gun guards. What will security officers without any arms do if someone comes to a hotel, mall or theatre fully armed ?

We need to also not be party to terror tourism. If we truly love Mumbai we should not go to see the Taj or the Oberoi Trident till they are officially open to the public. We will only be adding to the traffic there, and creating more problems for the police to manage that traffic. We need to let the armed forces, security forces and the police do their work and not be party to terror tourism.

We don't need words. We need action. We need to react, but we need to react in a calm, composed yet extremely strong manner. We need to send the strongest signals to the terrorists and anyone harboring them that India will not keep quiet anymore.
