    Freedom and Bindra
Thursday, August 14, 2008
Sadly a lot of us will just treat 15th August as a Holiday and that’s all, oh maybe some might buy flags (after bargaining) from street kids selling them at signals, and display our so called love for our country. Is that what true love for the country is ?

I believe that if you genuinely love your country you will do a few basic things like pay your taxes and all other duties and levies regularly and honestly, you will keep your city clean, you will vote, you will react to situations in society. We always have a lazy reply saying what difference will it make it make if I don't pay some of my taxes, I pay most, there are so many others who avoid so many taxes. To these people I will talk about the power of one. We all know how powerful the power of one is. Whether its one man standing in front of the tanks in Tiananmen square or one man refusing to use salt made by the British, the power of one is unarguable. So let us not look for excuses ad put the blame on someone and everyone else, let is start by doing, by paying, by reacting.

I believe the problem in our society is not that we don't see, it is that we don't do. We might pass by a garbage heap everyday and even thro Garbage in it, but why don't we get it cleared and throw the garbage in the right place ? We might criticize the government day in and day out, yet on election day some of us sit at home and don't go vote for the right people.

The other person I really want to talk about is Bindra. Who doesn’t want to talk about him. However I have some other questions. Today all the sports bodies that are praising Bindra or showering him with gifts, what did they do in building Bindra as a sports-person ? Bindra is undoubtedly one of the most talented sports-persons in our country but that talent needed to be nurtured, to do that his father set up a shooting range for him in his house. What have our sports bodies done to help shooting or any other sport ? The sad plight of Indian sport is to be seen to believe. Actually we see it but choose not to do anything about it. The sad facilities, the poor treatment most of our sports-persons receive is something to b ashamed of.

It wasn’t ironical but probably a good wake up call for sports in India that Bindra wins the Gold and the Indian cricket team loses another series on the same day. Its time we use a lot of the money spent on building cricket stadiums on other sports facilities as well, and also on nurturing other talents like Bindra.

India needs more sports-persons like Abhinav Bindra.
