We would all be so proud the day India gets its first Oscar. Should we be? Why do we still need a stamp of gora approval to tell us that we've arrived? I feel we've arrived long back, years ago.
Tell me, does Hollywood or world cinema have a Bimal Roy? Or Satyajit Ray? Or Hrishikesh Mukherjee? Or Guru Dutt? Or Raj Kapoor? Or Yash Chopra? Or V Shantaram? Or Vijay Anand? Or Raj Khosla? Or Mehboob Khan? Or K Asif?
Does world cinema have poets like Sahir Ludhianvi? Or Kaifi Azmi? Or Anand Bakshi? Or Javed Akhtar? Or Gulzar? Or Prasoon Joshi today? We have the best filmmakers, the best poets, the best actors, the best technicians the world has seen, sorry, the world has NOT seen, we've seen them. Here lies the problem. We have not marketed the jewels of our Cinema to the world, except for a Satyajit Ray. Even today our films are primarily seen the world over mainly by people from the sub-continent. I believe our great filmmakers, like the ones I've mentioned, and many others from Hindi and regional cinema are no less than a Fellini or Godard or anyone from world cinema. We've just not marketed them to a world audience. Indian cinema is rich with great filmmakers who've made films on themes and subjects in a manner only they could.
I hope one day someone from India starts to market our greats to a world audience so the world can see what great films have been in India in the past and continue to be made. Today with brilliant films like Rang De Basanti, Munna bhai and Taare Zameen Par, we can show the world where our cinema is. The west goes into overdrive pushing their films and filmmakers; we need to do that too. We need to have festivals of our filmmakers and showcase them correctly. Today in all industries, Indian companies are taking over international companies; let's strive to do this in cinema too.
I'd like to end this with some words from a song from my film Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, "sooraj apni muthi mein hain, kulbula raha, naya sawera ris ris ke bahar hai aah raha, talwon se kehti hai manzil mujhe utha loh, waqt tumhara hain kismet ko gale laga loh, abhi toh dhun pur apni subko dekho nachayenge hum, dekhegi duniya jalwe humare yun jagmagayenge hum!" |
