11.30pm: As I sip on my Mojito in Zenzi, I think of my vacation ahead a much deserved and needed break. Tushar and Mrilanini were both with me, have offered to drop me off to the airport. My plan is to fly to San Francisco where I would meet my parents and my sister who has finished her graduation. Coincidentally, the release date of my film and graduation date of my sister were the same, and so I could not make it for her graduation. This was one of the many occasions that I have missed in the last one year while making my film. Luckily for me the film has been a success and my sacrifices seem worth it. I am scared to think about the 'what if' scenario- what if my film didn't do well and I happen to miss my parents anniversary.
As we make our way to the airport Tushar tells me how lucky I have been and how Jannat has created so much of a hype and was very well publicized .We switch on the radio and its 'Zara Sa', playing on the radio. Its been a while since the movie's release but the music seems to have taken a life of its own. I still meet people who tell me how much they have loved the music or a drunk phone call from a old school friend who is listening to my song in a club and is dancing to it.
My mind surges back to 16th May. I was in Calcutta promoting the film on the day of its release. We were going from theatre to theatre, radio station to radio station. At around 1 pm something strange happened. Mukesh Bhatt, Emraan and my phone began to ring at the same time. There were messages coming in by the second, I kept putting people on call wait. My mother complains that my phone have never stopped ringing since.
We were told house full in Noida, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune even Jaipur (it was still recovering from the tragic blasts). People in Jaipur had actually gone to the theatres expecting to see the film. The theatres were shut because of the blasts and the exhibitors actually got some theatres opened because of the overwhelming response to the film. Jannat had spread like wild fire - it was doing well in multiplexes, single screens, big centers and small centers.
Mr. Ashok Ahuja hugged me and said- "enjoy the success because you wont see it often. Most of the times you will fail. For your first film to be successful and that to a hit of this magnitude is truly like a dream. Go get drunk."
That weekend Jannat was bigger than IPL, Shah Rukh Khan, Ganguly, Tendulkar, Jayasuriya and the dozens of other cricketing demi gods.
As the car pulls into the airport I snap back to reality. I realize I know so little and can learn so much more. I realize I have climbed the peak of one mountain and I am staring at another. I will have to flush Jannat out of my system if I am ever to make another film. In time Jannat will be forgotten. Some other film will occupy the nations interest.
But I am glad to say that my film did entertain people. People sang the songs of my film. It's a great feeling … And now its time to do what Mr Ashok Ahuja told me - enjoy.
So I am ready to inhale life once again. London here I come. |

For the mortals of the world, there’s a famous saying about the city of Kashmir which says “If at all there is Heaven on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here”. But for the immortals of Bollywood, the same saying can be rephrased as “If at all there is Jannat on Earth, it is Kunal Deshmukh, it is Kunal Deshmukh, it is Kunal Deshmukh”. We are very sure that all of you who worship Bollywood must have got the connection like a fish to water.
But for starters, Kunal Deshmukh is the name who has, to his credit of bringing Jannat on Bollywood’s Earth. Being armed with degrees in Film Direction Courses from the prestigious NYFA (New York Film Academy) & NYU (New York University), New York, and Kunal started his filmi career with as an Assistant Director to Mohit Suri, who gradually and eventually landed up giving Bollywood its very own Jannat, a film that has both the masses and the classes asking for more!
The multi-talented Kunal will be sharing and blogging his views and thoughts about the topics that he feels strongly about, only on Bollywood Hungama, the Biblical site of Bollywood about which you feel strongly about. |
