    From Khiladi To 8 X 10
Saturday, November 15, 2008
To begin with a big Thank You to Kalindi for reposing so much faith in me. And to Five and Sushil for their thoughtful responses to my previous blog.

Even big films have to bear the brunt of delays and my return to the big picture..."8 x 10"[directed by Nagesh Kukunoor] was no exception. We started almost a year ago in Calgary[Canada] and just wrapped up in Cape Town [South Africa]. Blame it on the trappings of stardom, but the journey itself was enjoyable and most importantly it reunited me with my Khiladi co-star Akshay Kumar who has come a long way since that crackling Abbas Mustan caper.

Akshay seems to have cultivated a great sense of humour and always has cryptic comments on hand to describe everyday situations. In fact, a real guffaw was a sequence we were shooting after the death of his screen father Benjamin Gilani. There was a real English speaking Indian pundit conducting the thirteen day ceremony. Akshay asked him whether the prayers were in Sanskrit or Afrikana. When the pundit chanted a few Sanskrit shloks, Akshay immediately cooked up an Afrikana version of the shlok that was the funniest sounding thing the unit had heard for a long time. What was endearing was the fact that he didn't carry his super stardom on his sleeve. He seemed to balance it neatly with the humble Akshay we had always known. Not to mention, a new found confidence that he exuded as he performed his stunts and even sang his new rap number from Chandni Chowk To China like a seasoned crooner. Here was an actor who, over the years, had actually reinvented himself and blossomed in a way, very few have done in the recent past. No one would grudge him his place in the hall of fame. And if luck did play a part, then our jodi could have some Khiladi success rubbing off on this film too! I already see Nagesh and Shailendra Singh [Percept Pictures] smiling in anticipation.

Anant Mahadevan
The one word that doesn't exist in his dictionary is 'Impossible'. We are talking about the experimental and talented Anant Mahadevan, who shot to fame in the first frame of his life.Better known as 'Chintamani' from ADOS PADOS,'Purnaiya' in THE SWORD OF TIPU SULTAN,a role that established this man so firm that it seems like the Lord of Destiny must have personally asked him, the kind of lines he wishes to have on his palm!.

He made a splash in Bollywood with his films like Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar, Dil Maange More, Victoria No. 203 , Aksar, Aggar, Staying Alive and the forthcoming Anamika. Irrespective of the films’ fate at the B-O, his work never went unnoticed. No wonder, his ‘To Do’ list only talks of films, films and more films!
