    Direct Dil Se
Monday, April 21, 2008
Direct Dil Se was actually the title Viveck Vaswani and I had struck on, for my first feature, but then 'Dil Vil Pyar Vyar' elicited a more enthusiastic response. I believe blogs should be straight from the heart because it gives you that moment of connection with your audience, and this being my very first, it gives me an opportunity to look back at those 28 years of theatre, television, commercials, and films.

A dear actor friend of mine had once said, and rightly so…"Anant what really matters here is how long one lasts". Longevity, in a way, reinstates that your track record wasn't just a dream. The creative world has been akin to a graduation process for me...from theatre, television, and film acting to theatre, television and movie direction. And the magic word all these 28 years has been ...learning. There is so much to absorb and execute that a lifetime isn't enough. I am glad I belong to the creative world! Someone put it so aptly…"there are only two major forces in the world...the scientist and the artist[e]. But even a scientist has to follow the formula and deduct correctly, the artist[e] breaks the formula and often need not play it by the rules. That then is the challenge. I found the need to educate myself in the sciences [chemistry, physics, biology] but the thirst to apply it scientifically in the arts took over and I found myself over ruling the orthodoxy of family tradition and stepping into a world that was a passionate hobby at best.

Today after feature films like Khiladi, Baazigar, Badshah, Gardish, Ishq etc and TV serials like the 'Sword of Tipu Sultan' and others. After 3000 episodes of television direction and 7 feature films, the urge now is to raise the bar, think more out of the box, and keep strides with the mature thinking the world has woken up to. Like Steven Spielberg said, "When I grow up, I still want to be a director." At times, audience tastes don't let you grow up easily, but its a decisive moment and I have to graduate again. I do hope I can introduce you to a whole new world of thinking cinema, even as I entertain.

That should be good enough to begin. I owe this blog to all those people who still remember me as 'Chintamani'...now who was it who said that public memory is short?
